The majority of Form One students admitted into KYS do not have prior music education, then as well as now. But every student is expected to learn to play at least one instrument in the course of their studies.

How ever, to be eligible to play in the orchestra requires a high level of dedication and performance fluency with their instruments of choice, with selection based strictly on merit.

Music is taken seriously at KYS. The Music Department is headed by the Director of Music, who is assisted by tutors for the strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, piano and keyboards sections.
