Form Three Rajin
Citrasari Night was held on 29th April 2011 at the Kolej Yayasan Saad Great Hall. It was an Inter-House competition with each house performing two types of dances: one traditional and the other contemporary.
The event started at 9 p.m. with the Hussein House performing the Zapin Tenglu and Joget Melayu to the great enjoyment of the audience. The next House to perform was Razak House which performed the Inang, Zapin Sebat and Joget Melayu. The Inang dance was performed by the girls while the Zapin Sebat was performed by the boys. Both boys and girls then performed the Joget Melayu in pairs. Rahman House, the last to perform, combined the Inang and Joget with grace and elegance. It was obvious that the audience enjoyed this first segment of traditional dances very much.
The next segment was the contemporary dance, and this year’s theme was “Kepulauan Melayu” or “Malay Islands”. Razak House, which choreographed their own dance movements, performed a Sarawakian dance. Their dance, which was very expressive and energetic, impressed the judges greatly, especially the head judge. Hussein House, which came next, performed the Jara (Asmara)dance. They got loud cheers from the audience for their superb performance. Rahman House, in an interesting twist, used Chinese fans for the Randai dance, and this impressed us all. The Houses were in serious competition!
The results? Afiqah binti Ismail was declared the best traditional dancer in the female category while Luqman Hadzrin bin Saifudin won in the male category. Fatiha Athira was chosen best contemporary female dancer. No winner was declared for the male category for this segment. The Overall Best Traditional Dance category was won by Razak House with 198 points while the Best Contemporary Dance category was won by Hussein House with 214 points. The overall champions for the night was Hussein House which won the highest number of points in the contemporary dance category.
This year’s Citrasari Night, which saw the traditional and modern aspects of dance well woven together, sets a very high standard for subsequent dance events. Citrasari is definetely a night to look forward to next year. Whatever will the Houses come up with next?
